Shore Birds, Raku fired ceramic

Shore Birds, Raku fired ceramic

from €110.00

Raku fired Ceramic Shore Bird. This handmade ceramic sculpture is made using the smoke firing technique of Raku. Its simplicity is reminiscent of native shorebirds found on the beaches all over the West of Ireland.

The body of the sculpture is glazed raku ceramic, and the beak is a reclaimed nail taken from a restored ‘Galway Hooker’ boat (traditional fishing boat used in Galway and Connacht). The nail in your sculpture can be up to 100 years old and is fired with the bird sculpture. The black crackle lines are formed as the glaze cools as the sculpture is transferred from the kiln into the combustion chamber and shows where the smoke penetrates the porous ceramic.

The legs of the bird are wire and assembled after firing.
